ENCHANTING CADIZ: EUROPE’S OLDEST CITY

Cadiz was not on our original itinerary. It became our final destination on May 26 because of the hassles we experienced in Seville.  So we decided to push on and ended up in Cadiz, on the Atlantic ocean side of Spain.Screen Shot 2014-05-26 at 11.41.00 PM

We had a marvelous time there. Back on a beach for the first time in over three months. Except, of course, it was the Atlantic not the Hawaiian Pacific. So the water was much colder.

Reading about the Cadiz history along the way from Seville, we also learned that it is actually Europe’s oldest city (according to the tour guide we read). Here’s what Wikipedia said about it:

Cádiz, the oldest continuously-inhabited city in Spain, and one of the oldest in southwestern Europe. It has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. The city is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network.

And we were lucky enough to catch a very beautiful Cadiz sunset while we were having dinner and a beachside restaurant.

Don’t you love that sand art?

We finished the evening at this lovely beachfront seafood restaurant.

Morning Walk on Beach, in Old Town

The following morning, May 27, we went back to the beach for a morning walk.  Then we turned around and walked all the way to the Old Town Cadiz, where most of the ancient tourist sights are.

After that, it was time to hit the road again. Destination Gibraltar. And then Malaga.
