Last night, Elizabeth and I attended a wonderful event in downtown Phoenix – the season opening gala of the Arizona Opera. It was held at the new AZ Opera building, across the street from the Phoenix Art Museum.
We got there a bit late, but were nevertheless welcomed by a professional photographer who took this “red carpet” shot… [you’ll have to imagine a red carpet instead of red bricks].
The “Valle del Sol” (Valley of the Sun) Mariachi band was playing as the cocktails were served in the outdoor courtyard. Elizabeth went to them like a duck to water and requested her favorite song – “Volver, Volver.” We danced and sang it with them.

We were the only ones doing it. One man stood right next to the band and watched us silently the whole time. Later during dinner, one of the opera company soloists (you can see her in this shot) came over to our table to thank us for dancing.
“It was wonderful to watch you having so much fun,” she said.
This Phoenix Mariachi band will also be performing in the first opera of the season – the “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna.” Elizabeth and I are planning to catch it in Tucson later in October.
Here’s now is a file footage of “Volver, Volver” by Mariachi Palmeros band of Houston, Texas, filmed in Nov 2011:

Back to downtown Phoenix, the AZ Opera photographer kept snapping shots of the scene.
Then I requested “Guantanamera Guajira.” And we sang and danced again . In the end, think the four Mariachi band players had as much fun as we did. 🙂
Here’s now “Guantanamera” as I recorded it earlier this year at Eagle’s Nest in Scottsdale.

Finally, her’s now a video of the Arizona Opera company members’ performances during last night’s dinner at the “Black Box,” as this studio in the new building is called. They finished the concert with a tribute to Arizona written by a German composer. They also sang “Ode to Arizona” in German. 🙂
